Eyjahunda Puppies

"We had a wonderful time. We practically levitated back to [our house].  We knew we would fall in love with [the puppy] but I wasn't expecting to be speechless when I saw Kol and Rassie. They are so amazing and beautiful in person. I think Kol is an old Soul."

  Eyjahunda's 2008 Litter:

CH Pineridge Kolperla, CGC, TDI and CH Hnúks Breki, CGC

Happily, our 2008 litter is reserved. There has been quite a bit of interest in a litter from Rassie. She will have her hips tested at two years (May, 2009) and that will determine which stud we will choose for her.

Rassie will be evaluated by Pat Hastings in July of 2008 and is currently tied for the #1 UKC Top Dog position in the United States. She became a conformation Champion at six months old. She has a wonderful temperament and we believe she will produce excellent puppies. As we did with Kol, we will not breed Rassie until there is a viable waiting list for her puppies as we do not believe that dogs should be bred absent interest in the litter and we hope that we can contribute something to this amazing breed.

If you are interested in a pup from her first litter, please contact us so that we can send you a puppy application.

Eyja Hunda's Breeding Hierarchy

Health

Conformation and Soundness

Temperament

Beauty

Eyjahunda Icelandics is committed to breeding happy, healthy Icelandic Sheepdogs.

Therefore, prior to breeding, our dogs must successfully pass several tests to insure good health, temperament, conformation, and soundness.  While we want to produce beautiful dogs, our primary concerns revolve around health, good temperament and proper conformation.

  • Kol and Rassa are UKC Conformation Champions and are both UKC Top Ten Icelandic Sheepdogs.  Kol was evaluated by Pat Hastings and was found to be structurally sound.  Pat said, "You can do anything you want with this dog".  We have.  Kol has participated in herding, agility, obedience, conformation, therapy dog and rally.  She is a well-rounded, athletic dog who learns quickly.
  • Kol is a loving, distinguished, beautiful girl.  She recently took Best Bitch at the West Coast's largest Icelandic Dog Show in history.
  • Kol and Rassa are registered in the Canadian Kennel Club. Kol was voted the Canadian Icelandic Sheepdog Club's Top Therapy Dog for 2007. She is registered with the UKC and the AKC-FSS.  The Icelandic Sheepdog will be moved to the AKC's Misc. Class in July of 2008.
  • Kol holds the AKC Canine Good Citizen title and the Therapy Dog International (TDI) title.  She has worked in a juvenile hall in a program called Come, Sit, Stay and currently participates in TDI (ID #073265) volunteer work at an alzheimer's facility.  She loves people and is very good with children.
  • She carries the rare chocolate gene (VetGen report #47185).  She also carries black tricolor, grey and tan.  All of Kol's puppies will carry the tricolor gene. Her father has an amazing long coat.  Kol passed her CERF test on 6.5.07.  Kol's CERF registration number is IS-255/2007--29).  She is free of eye disease and her parents are free of eye disease.
  • Kol took her PennHip on Nov 4th.  Her right hip is .54 (50th percentile) and her left is .69 (20th percentile).  Kol's mother has OFA excellent hips and her father has OFA good hips.
  • Kol recently passed her Herding Instincts Test and is very athletic.
  • One of the most striking things about Kol is her intelligence.  She problem solves and learns things very quickly.  She has been successful in every class we have attended and excels in her current obedience course.

Ans Beer-Schell with Frani and pups in the Netherlands. Frani is Kol's GG Grandmother and was the first Icelandic Sheepdog imported to the Netherlands. The color pattern of Frani has been passed down five generations to Kolperla. Because of that, we believe we will have some beautiful tricolors in this litter. Each puppy in the litter will be a carrier of tricolor.

Kol's Grandpa
djarfur.jpg
Netherlands Champion Djarfur fra Thydur Stadir

Kol comes from a line of spectacular black tri colors that began with Frani, pictured above with puppies. Frani was grandmother to Djarfur, Kol's grandfather. We hope to produce another generation of dogs with these spectacular markings. Djarfur, pictured here, is now 13 years of age and enjoying retirement on Nouda's couch.
Kol carries the rare chocolate gene as verified by VetGen.

Eyja Hunda's breeding considerations are:

STRUCTURE/CONFORMATION: As author and structure expert, Pat Hastings, says, dogs will do anything we ask of them.  They want to please us and if they do not have sound structure, they can injure themselves trying to make us happy.  Before enrolling our dogs in any athletic activities, we find out what they can handle, what they are built to do.

Kol's structure was evaluated by Pat Hastings in August, 2006.  Kol was found to be structurally sound.  In fact, Hastings noted that, "You can do anything you want with her."  This is what we wish for all of our dogs and the standard we will breed to.

Whenever possible, Eyja Hunda litters will be evaluated by Pat Hastings prior to placement.

HIPS: Eyja Hunda is committed to making every effort to produce pups with good hips.  Because the ISD is a herding breed, the ability to do the job they were created to do is of the utmost importance.

FEET: "The dew claw characteristic is one of most important characteristics of the breed. In the Icelandic standard it says: 'Sporar: Sterklegir, tvöfaldir sporar (fjársporar), eru mjög ćskilegir.  Séu tvöfaldir sporar  á fram- og afturfótum er hundurinn alspora.'

Translation: 'Dew claws: Strongly built, double dew claws (sheep dew claws), are very desirable.
A dog with double dew claws on both front and hind legs is called fully dew clawed (my translation of alspora). '" Thordur Runolfsson

Eyja Hunda Icelandics believes that it is important to rebuild and maintain the strong double dew claws, on both front and back legs whenever possible.  Among other things, this will be a strong consideration when selecting studs and breeding bitches.

TEMPERMENT:  The ISD is curious, highly intelligent, problem solves with ease and learns quickly.  They are pack oriented and want to be a part of everything the family does.  The ISD temperment is not suited to being alone for long periods of time.  They love children and will follow you about, wanting to be with you at all times.  They will sleep at your feet if permitted to do so.  They are not suited for inactive people, love exercise and are perfect hiking companions.  Because they are a herding breed, they require exercise and do use their voices.  The ISD is an ideal breed for the person who likes to spend time with their dogs.

EYES: Prior to breeding Eyja Hunda dogs, they pass the CERF exam.

EYJA HUNDA KENNEL: Eyja Hunda Icelandics built a kennel in 2006.  The picture below shows the outside portion of the kennel.  Note the use of concrete, rock, and grass to stimulate puppies and expose them to different surfaces.  Also note the inside doggie door that goes into a 10x10 interior dog room.  There is also a wooden doggie door that leads to the large yard.  The dogs also have the run of the deck which circles three sides of the house.

Most importantly, note that there are no dogs in the kennel.  They are in the much larger dog kennel, our house!  The dogs only stay in the kennel when we leave.  Yes, spoiled is the operative word when it comes to our dogs.

  • Kol is UKC* Conformation Kampioen.
  • Kol is tevens geregistreerd in Amerikaanse Kennelclub-FSS.
